<image:title>Blog - Sleep Training and Daycare - If you are already established with a provider, communication is your best resource. Many daycare providers are happy to try to accommodate sleep requests. After all, a well-rested baby equals a happier baby equals an easier day for the provider! The more specific and clear you can be, the easier it will be for your provider to work with you.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Five Benefits of Increasing Healthy Sleep in our Children - I’m a sleep consultant, a science nerd, and it’s also my birthday week, so I’m going to preach a little bit. (Hey, it’s only Sleep Awareness Week once a year!) I’ve said it before, sleep is a physiological need. It is at the base of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs along with clean air, shelter, and food. Without it our bodies</image:title>

Hosted by the World Sleep Society (https://worldsleepsociety.org), also with a “global call to action to organize sleep health awareness.” While many are out celebrating little green men today, (I see you Chicago!), the nerd in me is all about promoting healthy sleep.</image:title>

How? During sleep, your body produces and releases various types of immune cells such as cytokines, T-cells, and natural killer (NK) cells. These cells are responsible for</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Managing Daylight Savings Time - There are 3 ways you can handle the adjustment to the new time. The first is the gradual shift. This can start 4 days to a week ahead of time depending on how sensitive your little one is to the time increments. Wake your child 15 to 20 minutes earlier every few days until you have made the full shift by the day the clocks change. Naps and bedtime will shift earlier as well</image:title>

First, if it is safe, with no open space for limbs to get pinched, move the mattress to the floor to make the crib just</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Preventing Overtiredness in Babies - morning comes, there is a temporary increase in cortisol which helps you feel awake and refreshed. If the body is past the wind down period and the sleep cues are missed, it assumes there is a reason and a burst of cortisol is released. This switches the body into high alert mode. Babies become crabby and restless. (We see it in toddlers as squirelyness, or hyper activity in the evenings—and eventually meltdowns and bedtime battles.) This is because once the body hits this point, it is difficult to shut down. As the effects of overtiredness accumulate over days and weeks, it becomes harder to sleep, naps become inconsistent, there may be more night wakings, and even early morning wakings.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Preventing Overtiredness in Babies - Although we had a bit of a rough night, an extra long nap and early bedtime the following day helped us to get back on track. Watch the signs, allow your baby to make up their sleep debt, and provide a good sleep environment. If you had one bad day, baby should be back on track in 24 hours. If you are making up for weeks or months of sleep debt, it may take several days to a week. Hang in there! Now that you know what to watch for, your baby will be sleeping better in no time!</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - What if Baby Gets Sick? - The number one thing is to take care of your baby. Attend to their needs, without resorting back to their previous sleep props. It may help to sooth a little faster in the short term, however, is very confusing for babies and will make it more difficult to remove later. If baby needed a pacifier previously to fall asleep, maybe a little patting and humming will do the trick this time. If baby was fed to sleep, it’s okay to offer a sip of water, but don’t let them fall asleep with the bottle.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Staying on Track with a New Baby - The most common reason this can affect sleep is because one or both of the parents start feeling guilty about the fact that they don’t have the time and energy to dedicate to both children, so they try to compensate by making concessions, and those concessions frequently show up around bedtime. Extra stories, longer cuddles, getting into bed with them, and so on.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Staying on Track with a New Baby - During the day, however, I would suggest carving out a chunk of time reserved just for your toddler. It doesn’t have to be long, even 10-15 minutes is great, but make sure that your attention is focused solely on them. Let them decide what they want to do with the time, and feel free to just smother them with love and attention.</image:title>
